Code of Ethics

1. Confidentiality

  • The interpreter must treat all information acquired from work as confidential.

  • The interpreter cannot reveal information anywhere except for meetings directly related to the client’s work and unless there is permission from the customer to do so.

  • The interpreter must acknowledge additional measures enforced for confidentiality purposes.

2. Accuracy

  • The interpreter is responsible for delivering the message of the speaker accurately and without any personal prejudice against or in favor of the message conveyed.

  • The interpreter must be fully aware of not only the dictionary definition of the spoken words heard and interpreted into the target language but also the intention of the speaker reflected in the language including social and cultural backgrounds that affect the information being interpreted.

  • The interpreter must immediately confirm and correct should there be any misinterpretation of the speech being made.

3. Integrity

  • The interpreter, in principle, should not moderate or add to the information that the speaker is intending to convey and interpret the speech as spoken.

  • Unless specified, summarized interpretation is not permitted.

  • Prior to the start of interpretation, the interpreter is required to inform the parties involved that the communication between two speakers will be interpreted according to what the original language conveys.

  • The above items are subject to change depending on the purpose of interpretation as requested by the client, but are not within the interpreter’s sole judgment.

4. Fairness

  • The interpreter’s basic duty is to convey the communication between two parties, and not to speak about his/her opinion. The interpreter is neither responsible for nor obligated in getting involved in “who said what to whom.”

  • Even if the information spoken is faulty, wrong, or unethical, it is beyond the interpreter’s responsibility to make judgments or corrections on the information being spoken.

5. Neutrality

  • For fields of interpretation requiring strict neutrality, such as court or medical interpretation, the interpreter must only convey the meaning of the message without agreeing or disagreeing with the speaker.

  • The interpreter must maintain the attitude or behavior described above to earn the respect and confidence that he/she can handle the parties objectively.

6. Representativeness

  • Unless the purpose of the interpretation requires neutrality, as in the interpretation of a business meeting; and at the request of the client, the interpreter can, on behalf of the client, speak about or express his/her thoughts.

  • In the case of the example above, the interpreter must receive an agreement from the client by informing him/her of the statement the interpreter intends to make and is required to report the content of the interpreter’s statement with honesty. The interpreter is responsible but not granted any rights regarding the results of the interpretation performed.

7. Professionalism

  • In any given circumstance, the interpreter must dress up professionally and maintain a professional demeanor throughout his/her work, from beginning to end.

  • The interpreter must always respect the client and any information acquired from the work and must not accept/request any form of gift or money in excess of the interpretation fee paid directly for his/her work.

  • The interpreter is responsible for reporting to his/her project manager, in detail, the situations and incidents that occurred during his/her work. The situations and incidents here include requests for working against the contents of this document or the contract, difficulties involved in carrying out the interpretation, unfair physical or verbal treatment, problems associated with field-specific terminologies, and other circumstances wherein the interpreter experienced trouble.

  • The interpreter must continue to improve the knowledge and skills related to his/her work through continuous learning and training.
